dj octopus has been busy in the last few years, appearing often alongside steve murphy on labels like love notes, chiwax, hot haus and shall not fade. on this new double pack for house crime he goes it alone, bringing the kind of raw, off-kilter but ultimately fun vibe that the label seems to plump for. born in 86 is an absolute head driller of a track, looped up but utterly addictive, while diastemia offers a very different kind of disco-infused groove. this personality split runs throughout, ensuring there s never a dull moment diving into any of these sides of wax. check the toy is mine if you need proof that octopus knows how to throw it down.

fredfades is a norwegian producer specialising in the uncut raw hip hop. here’s his debut solo album, “warmth”. tenor singer johnny clarke had many false starts in his youthful days. hanging around studio one as a schoolboy with jacob miller, clarke was supposed to record material written for him by bob andy, but somehow never made the grade. his 1973 debut recording for lesser-known producer glen stair was not released, and early work for clancy eccles failed to hit, though ‘everyday wondering’ for rupie edwards made an underground impact in britain and new york. subsequent singles for keith hudson and glen brown also did not get very far, but the breakthrough finally came when bunny lee asked him to sing ‘none shall escape the judgement,’ which was written by the singer earl zero, it became a massive hit that launched the ‘flying cymbal’ craze (based on an open-and-closed high-hat cymbal pattern, adapted from the soul train theme), and clarke became one of lee’s most reliable hit-makers, partly because lee stoked a rivalry between him and cornell campbell, whom lee had previously asked to voice ‘none shall escape.’ clarke’s satisfaction lp was recorded at harry j for lee, voiced at king tubby’s studio, and issued by third world in 1979. it is a set largely comprised of cover tunes, such as the strong opening update of the paragons’ ‘riding for a fall,’ the title track adapting their rock steady hit ‘my satisfaction’ in a post-rockers style. better still is the hard-hitting ‘reality’ tune, ‘play fool, get wise,’ which uses a proverb to relate a means of avoiding trouble on the dog-eat-dog mean streets of kingston.

mystica tribe is the musical alias of tokyo-based producer, taka noda. drawing on a wide range of influences from dub, soul, bass music, rhythm and blues mystica tribe has quickly been developing a very distinctive sound that exists in a weird, freaked out zone between dub and techno. noda is especially interested in deep, psychedelic music, and this is reflected in his productions, which are equally suited for late night listening sessions or bent, broken in dancefloors. his first track, meditation stick, was released in 2011 on dutch label sd records, backed by two remixes from label owners syncom data. this was followed by two more eps on sd records in 2013: stars are mine and flowers. artists like gilles peterson and 2562 have supported these well-received releases, and his track. his temple recently appeared on pangaea s fabric live 73 mix cd. in 2014, noda is launching his own label, mystica tribe records, through which he plans to continue developing his uniquely psychedelic take on dub and techno. his recent ep, lizard, was released on his label in 2014. jade eye ep was released on his label in 2016.

new kid felix leifur made quiet a stir with his debut release on dirt crew last year. the icelandic juggernaut comes from the striving reykjavik music scene and is working closely with the lagaffe tales guys on building a new northern house empire. since his debut hes been working hard on creating a more varied vision of his unique lo slung hip hop approach to house music. with this ep he offers six new outings that have one thing in common, very warm and moody sounds ranging from disco through jazz and hip hop. were certain that he will continue to further cement his name in the coming years and were looking forward to working with him on plenty of exciting projects. opening with eyelids, felix delivers a rough, deep and dark house cut with broken beats, warped piano loops and twisted sampling throughout. classy has a smoky jazz feeling, kept tight with clever beat programming while evolving around a catchy sax motif. our personal fav is the title track, in general, a stunning broken beat house jam, smooth and loose, with swirling keys and a funk flavoured bass. the b-side begins with midwinter, a dance floor gem on a straight up junket. its deep, forward moving and bass driven, much like his track feels like that featured on our deep love compilation in 2016. yet another highlight for us is apollo, theres not many records out there that sound quite like this, thoroughly warped and contorted, depraved strings and a hypnotising rhodes arc and strain until the bass drops and it all falls in place psychedelic beauty! he closes with mine, a dope lo fi hip hop beat that casually wraps our ears, an ice cold soul infused piece.
